S'poreans Find Mobile Devices a Boon to Productivity

Business Times, Singapore - 14 July 2009

Most Singaporeans say mobile communications devices like smartphones and laptops boost productivity.

Nine out of 10 local respondents to the Kelly Global Workforce Index say the ability to work away the office yet remain in constant contact has been a positive development - even though more than 40 per cent now work longer hours.

While higher than the survey's overall average of 84 per cent, the proportion of Singaporeans who recognise the productivity benefits of mobile communications was lower than that in China(93 per cent), India (92 per cent) and Indonesia (97 per cent).

The survey compiled almost 100,000 views from people in 34 countries, including more than 3,000 in Singapore.

Findings in Singapore also revealed that Gen Y respondents, (aged 18-29) place the greatest importance on a good work-life balance across. About 71 per cent of Gen Y, compared with 64 per cent of Gen X (aged 30-47) and 59 per cent of Baby Boomers (aged 48-65) view that balance as extremely important.

Gen Y respondents are also the most dissatisfied with their current work-life balance, with only half saying they are happy with the situation.

A gender breakdown of the satisfaction level for work-life balance show males (54 per cent satisfied) and females (53 per cent) see almost eye to eye on the issue.
